Handmade and hand painted ceramic vase "Quartara Siciliana" from the DS line
With this DS vase we wanted to pay homage to the Sicilian quartara. It is a traditional ceramic jar, typical of Sicily, which in the past was used mainly for storing water and transporting liquids such as wine. Its shape is characterized by a wide body and narrow mouth, often having a longer neck and a relatively wide base. This design allowed water to be kept cool for a long time by evaporation through the ceramic, a process that helps to lower the internal temperature.
Pottery quartare of yesteryear were often decorated by hand with traditional motifs (e.g., floral, geometric, symbolic designs). This is not surprising given Sicily's centuries-long experience in the world of pottery making: indeed, it is one of the most representative expressions of the island's culture and craft traditions, with roots that go back to prehistoric times and continue to influence Sicilian art and daily life today. The hand-painted quartara thus became a decorative as well as a functional object, like many others: just think of oil lamps, pitchers, casseroles, even spoons and ladles!
Today, the Sicilian quartara is above all an item of cultural interest and a typical souvenir of the island, representing an important part of the Sicilian craft tradition. With this vase from the DS line, you can bring it to your home in full Ceramiche De Simone style!
